University of Maiduguri is indeed where men are made. Our honorable Vice Chancellor Professor Shugaba made it clear during SUG inauguration that “We are here for you… without you, we will not be here… “
It’s heartbreaking fellow students are making “our Unimaid” a burden to us in the name of “increase of school fees”
When University of Maiduguri Governing council increased fees, we cried and made all sort of speech against it but unfortunately, we are the evil of our future, the enemy of our destiny.
A student that clears hostel for N22,000 sell it to a fellow student as high as N70,000. A bed space for such amount to a fellow student for that amount is outrageous and inhumane.
Where is our religion? Where is our humanity? Where is our instinct? It is absolutely clear we are the problem of our problem. We forget that it is illegal to sell hostel, we forget “riba” is “haram. ”
A student narrated her story to me of how she tried to buy a bed space and the girl told her “last price is N55,000, no negotiation.” Without shame, without regret she said no negotiation.
We need to stop this impunity. Law students say “He who seek equity must do equity.” We shouldn’t be complaining of fees hike and on our part, we are more damaging. Do not hike hostel price to others. Many struggle to come to school, many come from far places and all they need is education and a place to rest in the night.
We need to be just with each other and show humanity to ourselves. Someday, we will meet somewhere. Let us not leave bad record behind. We will be here for a short time.
